Nepal Lifts Curfews in Gaur and Birgunj After Communal Clashes

Officials pledge tight security before the March 5 vote.

Overview

  • Rautahat authorities ended the curfew in Gaur at 10:00 am Monday after unrest tied to a wedding procession dispute during Ramadan left at least eight injured and a vehicle torched.
  • Parsa officials imposed an indefinite curfew in Birgunj at 9:45 am Monday following a youth clash over parking in Shripur, then lifted it at 4:30 pm with prohibitory orders in force until 8:00 am Tuesday.
  • The Birgunj order covered areas bounded by Bypass Road, the Sirsia River, Gandak Chowk, and Shankaracharya Gate, with exemptions for essential services and exam-related travel.
  • District administrations invoked Section 6(a) of the Local Administration Act to restrict movement, gatherings, rallies, and demonstrations in affected zones.
  • Police reported about 20 detentions linked to the Rautahat violence as Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, and in some reports the Army reinforced sensitive southern districts and broader election security across nearly 11,000 polling stations.
