Near‑Total Lunar Eclipse to Darken About 96% of Moon on Aug. 27–28

Skywatchers across the Americas, Europe and Africa will see a slow, long eclipse whose reddish color will depend on dust and aerosols in Earth’s atmosphere.

Overview

  • The deep partial eclipse will take place the night of Thursday, Aug. 27 into the early hours of Friday, Aug. 28 and reaches its greatest coverage at roughly 12:12–12:13 a.m. EDT when about 96% of the Moon lies in Earth’s umbra.
  • The full sequence runs roughly 5 hours 38 minutes from penumbral start to finish, with the conspicuous partial (umbral) phase lasting several hours and peak darkness lasting around 1 hour and 39 minutes.
  • Large parts of North and South America, Europe and Africa will see at least part of the event while regions such as India will not see the eclipse because the Moon is below the horizon.
  • No eye protection is required to view the lunar eclipse and simple optics like binoculars or a small telescope will sharpen the view and help capture color changes.
  • Observers should seek a clear, unobstructed western or southwest horizon and elevated sites where the Moon will be low at maximum in places such as the UK and South Africa, and note that volcanic ash, wildfire smoke or dust will alter how red or bright the eclipsed Moon appears.
