Nearly 100 Homes Evacuated in Coalsnaughton Over Suspected Mine Subsidence

The Mining Remediation Authority is carrying out a specialist probe to establish if historic mine workings beneath streets caused the ground movement and whether residents can return.

Overview

  • Evacuations began after residents reported shuddering and visible damage, and the number of properties cleared has grown since 18 May to 97 homes as of 30 May.
  • Officials say the movement is being treated as potentially linked to shallow, historic coal workings and MRA data shows a former mine entrance beneath Dunmoss View.
  • The Mining Remediation Authority has started specialist work on site, including drilling, trial digs, property inspections and the installation of ground sensors and cameras to monitor stability.
  • As a safety precaution the council has cut some utilities, including disconnecting the gas supply on Nechtan Drive, and some residents have been offered emergency accommodation and support.
  • Residents have been told they will likely be unable to return until at least next Thursday, local housing resources are strained, and the Scottish Government has engaged with local officials to coordinate longer-term help.
