NEA: Bintan Hotspots Detected, Haze Unlikely to Reach Singapore

Northerly winds still pose a conditional risk of smoke drift should regional fires persist.

Overview

  • Several hotspots were identified on Indonesia’s Bintan Island on Jan 29, and NEA said they are downwind of Singapore.
  • A hotspot was also detected in Johor despite extensive cloud cover limiting satellite visibility of ground conditions.
  • Johor’s fire and rescue department conducted water bombing on Wednesday to tackle a peatland fire in Pengerang that began on Jan 23.
  • Singapore’s 24-hour PSI was in the good range at 33 to 48 as of 10pm on Thursday.
  • NEA observed light showers on Thursday and expects increased rainfall over the weekend that should help ease smoke haze.
