NDMA Flags April 1–10 GLOF and Flood Risk for Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
Above-normal heat with a new weather spell could speed glacier melt.
Overview
- The NDMA warned of glacial lake outburst floods, flash floods and landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa from April 1–10, noting that a GLOF is a sudden flood from a failing glacial lake.
- The NEOC issued a countrywide alert for rain and thunderstorms from March 31 to April 5, highlighting flash-flood risks in Balochistan’s Turbat, Kech, Gwadar, Khuzdar, Zhob and Lasbela.
- The PDMA earlier issued a GLOF alert for Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat and Upper Kohistan, directing evacuation drills, stocked safe sites and pre-positioned rescue gear.
- Emergency Operations Centres remain active around the clock as authorities coordinate with NHA, FWO and the C&W Department for quick road clearance if landslides or washouts block routes.
- Officials urged people in low-lying areas to stay alert, avoid fast streams and postpone travel to sensitive valleys, with controlled breaching of unstable lakes listed as a last-resort step.
