NCW Demands FIRs, Arrests and Time-Bound Probes in Two Marital Violence Cases

The commission set a seven-day deadline for police reports to tighten oversight.

Overview

  • The National Commission for Women, which intervened Saturday, directed the Maharashtra DGP to register a case, arrest the suspects, and run a time-bound investigation into a reported domestic-violence suicide.
  • In a separate order Friday, the commission told the Telangana DGP to ensure an FIR, immediate arrests, a prompt probe, and protection for a Hyderabad survivor who reported gang rape.
  • Begumpet police in Hyderabad registered the case last week after a 22-year-old said her husband and his friends assaulted her on their wedding night in July 2025, and officers say the accused are on the run.
  • In Maharashtra, police identified the deceased as 25-year-old Eshwari Bhujang-Bankar and said a recent assault after a dispute over hair found in food preceded the suicide, with a case opened at Chhawani police station.
  • The NCW, a national watchdog set up by law, can act on its own and instruct state police chiefs, and it gave both states seven days to file action reports that detail arrests and evidence collection.
