NCAA Finalizes 2026 March Madness Player Availability Rules With Deadlines and Fines

Public reporting will be piloted to curb betting pressure on athletes.

Overview

  • For the first time, teams in the men's and women's Division I tournaments must file player availability reports, due by 9 p.m. local time the night before each game with updates required two hours before tipoff.
  • Players will be classified as available (greater than a 75% chance to play), questionable (up to 75%), or out, with all others presumed available.
  • Schools that fail to comply face escalating penalties: up to $10,000 for a first offense, up to $25,000 for a second, and up to $30,000 for subsequent violations plus up to $10,000 for the head coach, with fines assessed after the tournaments.
  • The NCAA will publish the reports on NCAA.com, HD Intelligence will run the reporting platform, and participating programs received training materials and guidance in advance.
  • The requirement is a 2026 pilot limited to the basketball championships, to be evaluated for possible broader use, building on similar reporting already common in the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Big East, and SEC.
