NC Claims Three J&K Rajya Sabha Seats as BJP Secures One, Triggering Vote-Count Dispute

The vote restores Upper House representation to the Union Territory for the first time since 2019.

Overview

  • Official tallies show NC’s Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan won with 58 votes and Sajjad Kichloo with 57, while NC treasurer Gurwinder Singh (Shammi) Oberoi took a third seat with 31.
  • BJP state chief Sat Sharma captured the fourth seat with 32 votes against NC’s Imran Nabi Dar, who polled 21, with three ballots invalidated in that contest.
  • A total of 87 votes were cast: 86 MLAs voted in person, AIP’s Mehraj Malik voted by postal ballot from jail, and JKPC chief Sajad Lone abstained.
  • The elections were conducted under three separate notifications, with single-seat contests needing about 45 votes and the two-seat notification requiring roughly 29 each, shaping the arithmetic for the final seat.
  • Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said NC’s votes did not cross over and questioned four extra votes credited to the BJP; BJP leaders rejected allegations of cross-voting or horse-trading.
