NBC Poll: Americans Sour on AI Even as Use Rises

Most voters see more risk than benefit, expressing little trust in either party.

Overview

  • AI posts a net favorability of -20 in the NBC News survey, with only the Democratic Party and Iran rated more negatively.
  • Fifty-six percent say they used an AI tool in the past two months, up from 48% in late 2024, with usage highest among professional managers and white-collar workers and lowest among retirees.
  • Fifty-seven percent of voters say the risks of artificial intelligence outweigh its benefits, compared with 34% who see more upside.
  • On stewardship, 20% say Republicans handle AI better, 19% choose Democrats, 33% pick neither, and 24% say both parties are about the same.
  • The poll shows sharp splits by age and gender, with voters 18–34 and women 18–49 most negative and men over 50 and upper-income voters slightly positive, as concerns span jobs and rising power bills tied to data centers.
