Naya Young Wins Tampa District 5 Runoff, Defeating Thomas Scott

The longtime community organizer prevailed despite a large fundraising gap in a low-turnout special runoff.

Overview

  • With early votes counted and all but two precincts reporting, Young held nearly 61% of the vote, a lead described as too large to overcome.
  • She will be sworn in Friday at 3 p.m. to complete Gwen Henderson’s term representing District 5, which includes downtown Tampa, East Tampa, Ybor City and parts of West Tampa.
  • Turnout hovered just over 11% shortly before polls closed, with a little more than 5,000 ballots cast.
  • Fundraising reports through Oct. 23 showed Scott with nearly $95,000 raised versus Young’s just over $41,000.
  • Young is a longtime grassroots activist and former Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association executive; Scott is a former county commissioner, ex-city council member and senior pastor.
