Navy’s Upgraded P-8A Poseidon Reaches Initial Operational Capability
The milestone signals a fleetwide upgrade push with 12 more jets requested in FY2027.
Overview
- The P-8A Increment 3 Block 2 entered service after VX-1 testing, a milestone NAVAIR announced Friday.
- The upgrade adds a new combat systems suite, faster processing, higher-security architecture, wideband SATCOM, ASW signals intelligence, improved tracking, and new antennas, sensors, racks, and wiring.
- The FY2027 request seeks 12 aircraft for about $4.2 billion and more than $381 million for modifications, which include radar work, structural improvements, and fielding Increment 3 Block 2.
- The first Navy jet began the modification in March 2024 at Boeing’s Cecil Airport facility and finished in June 2025, while Australia has committed to the same upgrade for its fleet with most work to occur in-country.
- Recent RNZAF P-8A patrols from Kadena reported 35 suspect ships and drew Chinese criticism that New Zealand rejected as it cited UN sanctions enforcement on North Korea.
