Navi Mumbai Crime Branch Busts Two Vehicle-Theft Rackets, Recovers 43 Vehicles

Police say suspects learned theft methods from social media, then altered vehicle identities to sell them.

Overview

  • Five suspects were arrested in targeted operations ordered after a surge in two-wheeler and autorickshaw thefts across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with recoveries valued at about ₹46 lakh.
  • The organised gang case produced 26 recoveries — 21 motorcycles and five autorickshaws — linked to 23 thefts across Navi Mumbai, Thane and Mumbai.
  • In a separate action, habitual offender Naser Sadan Khan, 58, with over 92 prior cases, was detained, leading to the seizure of 17 motorcycles and detection of 14 cases at Kharghar and APMC stations.
  • The four gang members were arrested in a Dombivli East trap on January 28 and remain in police custody until February 6.
  • Investigators are tracing owners of unclaimed vehicles, examining possible ties to other theft syndicates, and invoking Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act provisions for tampering with identification numbers.
