Navi Mumbai Chemical Plant Fire Contained After Spreading to Four Units

A probe into an electrical or chemical trigger follows a foam-and-tanker operation that contained the blaze.

Overview

  • Officials said the fire erupted around midday at BetaChem in the Pawane–Mahape MIDC zone and quickly ignited nearby facilities.
  • Four factories were affected, including Raigad Chemicals and two National Rubber units, with loud blasts reported and thick smoke visible for kilometres.
  • More than 10 fire engines and tankers from Navi Mumbai and MIDC stations responded, the incident was classified Level III, and the fire was contained in about three hours.
  • No injuries were reported as workers were evacuated, internal roads were cordoned, and residents in Koparkhairane and Ghansoli were advised caution due to drifting smoke.
  • Turbhe police registered the incident and a multi-agency investigation involving the fire department, MIDC and DISH is underway, with some media reports of wider damage and a tanker origin not confirmed by officials.
