Natural Gas Leak Near Béjar Capped and Mobile Alerts Lifted

Sealing the broken liquefied natural gas line ended the risk to nearby towns.

Overview

  • Emergency officials sent a follow-up ES-Alert around 5 p.m. local time saying the danger had ended and conditions were restored to normal.
  • The failure was a rupture in piping on a 60,000‑liter liquefied natural gas tank at a meat-processing complex in Fuentes de Béjar, releasing cryogenic liquid at about −163°C.
  • Military emergency units led a complex operation that capped the leak, checked the air with detectors, and transferred LNG to a safe tank without injuries.
  • Earlier, authorities activated the Castilla y León civil‑protection plan and the local coordination center, set up a command post with drones, and deployed firefighters and the Guardia Civil.
  • Roads near the plant, including the A‑66 and N‑630, were closed for hours and residents within roughly 7 kilometers were told to stay away, shut doors and windows, and avoid travel.
