NATO Jet Shoots Down Unidentified Drone Over Latvia

Officials view the case as evidence that electronic warfare can divert drones into allied airspace.

Overview

  • NATO confirmed that one of two Italian Eurofighter jets scrambled with two Turkish F-16s shot down an unidentified drone that entered northeastern Latvia on Friday, Aug. 14.
  • The drone was destroyed near the village of Rugāji in the Balvi region and wreckage fell in a wooded area with no reported casualties.
  • Latvian forces said the aircraft entered their airspace “as a result of Russian electromagnetic warfare,” but NATO has not independently confirmed the drone’s origin and has opened an investigation.
  • Finland briefly imposed air and sea restrictions in the eastern Gulf of Finland as a precaution and Latvian authorities urged residents in nearby municipalities to shelter while security teams searched for debris.
  • The incident adds to a recent rise in cross-border or stray drone activity tied to the Russia–Ukraine war and could lead NATO to strengthen air policing, surveillance, and rules of engagement on its eastern flank.
