NATO Concludes Dynamic Mongoose 2026 Anti-Submarine Exercise in Norwegian Sea

It strengthened NATO’s High North deterrence by testing multinational tactics through integrated P-8 air patrols, surface ships, submarines, autonomous systems.

Overview

  • NATO wrapped up Dynamic Mongoose 2026, which concluded 29 May, after two weeks of live anti-submarine training that brought nine Allied and Partner nations together in the Norwegian Sea.
  • The drill used progressively harder training serials to sharpen detection and tracking skills by mixing submarines, surface ships, helicopters, maritime patrol aircraft and autonomous systems in realistic hunter-versus-evader scenarios.
  • The Royal Air Force’s P-8A Poseidon force led the UK air contribution and flew sorties using sonobuoys and electronic sensors to locate submarines while a German P-8 detachment operated from RAF Lossiemouth under the November 2024 Trinity House Agreement.
  • Standing NATO Maritime Group One took part and its commander, Commodore Maryla Ingham, called the exercise a success for proving integration of advanced capabilities and for refining tactics, techniques and procedures.
  • Run under NATO’s Arctic Sentry posture, the exercise bolstered presence and readiness in the High North, improved crew readiness for demanding ASW work, and reinforced assurance measures for allies that rely on northern sea lanes and undersea infrastructure.
