National Portrait Gallery Unveils Elton John Family Portrait by Catherine Opie

The commission signals institutional recognition of John’s cultural legacy alongside the family’s philanthropic and LGBTQ+ significance.

Overview

  • The portrait is now on public view in the Mary Weston Gallery (Room 30) as part of Catherine Opie: To Be Seen, which opens this week.
  • The photograph was made in the family’s Old Windsor library three days before Christmas and features Elton John, David Furnish, their sons Zachary, 15, and Elijah, 13, and Labradors Joseph and Jacob.
  • In a joint statement, John and Furnish called the inclusion a “huge honour,” and at the unveiling John publicly expressed pride in his children and in Opie’s work.
  • National Portrait Gallery director Victoria Siddall said the work joins the collection to reflect John’s achievements in music, the couple’s humanitarian efforts, and their family life.
  • The Art Newspaper reports the commission is supported by the art foundation iArtis.
