National Gallery Picks Kengo Kuma to Design £350 Million Wing

The expansion anchors a £750 million plan to carry the collection into the present day.

Overview

  • The museum selected Kengo Kuma and Associates through an international contest, with the award pending ratification after a standstill that runs to April 16.
  • The new wing is budgeted at about £350 million and is expected to open in the early 2030s.
  • Kuma will work with UK firms BDP and MICA on a scheme that adds 1,500 square metres of permanent galleries and 800 square metres for temporary shows, with Portland stone facades and bridge links to the Sainsbury and Wilkins buildings.
  • The building will rise on the gallery-owned St Vincent House site just north of the Sainsbury Wing, which will be demolished.
  • Project Domani totals £750 million to fund post‑1900 art purchases and create an endowment as the gallery shifts from a pre‑1900 focus to showing work up to today.
