Overview
- Kengo Kuma & Associates, working with UK partners BDP and MICA, won the commission to design the new wing, with the appointment pending ratification after a standstill period that ends April 16.
- The expansion adds 1,500 sq m of permanent galleries and 800 sq m for temporary shows, and it includes a public roof garden for visitors.
- The building will rise on the St Vincent House site north of the Sainsbury Wing, which will be demolished, with bridges linking the addition to the Sainsbury Wing and the Wilkins building.
- The wing is budgeted at about £350 million within the £750 million Project Domani campaign, and the museum expects to open the new spaces in the early 2030s.
- The choice followed an international competition with 65 submissions and a shortlist that included Foster + Partners, Renzo Piano and Selldorf, and the jury praised Kuma’s Portland stone design with vaulted main galleries and a more geometric upper floor.
