Nation and Buenos Aires Sign Accord to Transfer Marcos Paz Prison, Paving Way to Close Devoto

City delivery by May will place the nearly finished complex under federal management to add capacity, easing pressure on police stations.

Overview

  • Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva and city minister Horacio Giménez signed the understanding that commits the city to hand over the facility in the first quarter of 2026.
  • The Marcos Paz complex will add 2,240 federally managed places and operate under national and international standards for security, treatment, and habitability.
  • Monteoliva said the aim is to close Villa Devoto in 2026 through phased transfers, estimating about 1,500 inmates will be moved.
  • The agreement includes authorization for up to 400 additional permanent places via modular units at Ezeiza’s Federal Complex IV and Unit 19.
  • Construction, restarted in December 2024, is about 95% complete, and officials say the added capacity will help clear roughly 2,291 detainees from city stations and lockups.
