Overview
- NASA confirmed the Roman Space Telescope is ready for launch on Aug. 30, 2026, with hydrazine fueling complete and integration and fairing encapsulation scheduled in the coming weeks.
- After liftoff from Kennedy Space Center, Roman will head to the Sun–Earth L2 point and perform a final orbital insertion about 100 days after launch before beginning science operations.
- Roman carries a Wide-Field Instrument that will survey huge sky areas—imaging roughly 2 billion galaxies in its main survey—and a coronagraph designed to directly image exoplanets.
- The observatory is expected to downlink an unprecedented volume of data, roughly 500 terabytes per year (about 1.4 terabytes per day), requiring expanded ground-station and archive handling.
- Project managers say the telescope finished major milestones early and under budget, has enough fuel for at least a five-year primary mission, and will complement Hubble and JWST by finding rare and nearer targets for follow-up.
