Overview
- The Roman Space Telescope, which is scheduled to launch on Aug. 30, will lift off on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center and head to the Sun–Earth L2 Lagrange point.
- Project teams completed major prelaunch work in July, including loading hydrazine propellant and beginning final integration and encapsulation with the Falcon Heavy.
- Engineers plan an early postlaunch sequence that includes a first-day course correction, deployment of power and antenna systems, arrival near L2 in about 30 days, and commissioning finishing roughly 100 days after launch.
- Roman’s Wide Field Instrument will capture Hubble-like sharpness over areas about 100 times larger, enabling surveys of billions of galaxies and a wide exoplanet census while a coronagraph demonstrator will test direct-imaging technology.
- The mission was delivered under budget and roughly nine months ahead of schedule, and its expected data flow of about 1–1.4 terabytes per day will require expanded ground stations, archives, and community analysis capacity.
