NASA Confirms Daytime Meteor Over Mid-Atlantic With Breakup Above New Jersey

NASA used hundreds of public reports to map the rare daytime meteor’s path.

Overview

  • The meteor, first visible at 2:34 p.m. Tuesday above the Atlantic off Mastic Beach on Long Island, traveled about 117 miles before disintegrating 27 miles over Galloway, New Jersey.
  • NASA said the object moved southwest through the upper atmosphere at roughly 30,000 miles per hour.
  • The American Meteor Society logged about 200 to 260 eyewitness reports across Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, along with a small number of videos and photos.
  • Witnesses described a bright flash and multiple green fragments lasting a few seconds, and some reported loud booms that shook homes.
  • Officials have not confirmed any meteorite finds or damage, and the event occurred during the February–April peak when fireballs appear 10% to 30% more often.
