NASA Clears Roman Space Telescope for Aug. 30 Falcon Heavy Launch

The observatory is being mated to the rocket this week ahead of a pad rollout that sets up months of commissioning at L2 to enable Roman’s wide-area surveys of the sky.

Overview

  • Mission managers completed a Flight Readiness Review and, as of Aug. 25, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is encapsulated in Falcon Heavy’s fairing and cleared for mating and rollout to Launch Complex 39A for a targeted liftoff on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 7:26 a.m. EDT.
  • After separation from the rocket Roman will travel roughly one million miles to the Sun–Earth Lagrange point 2 and then spend about 100 days deploying, aligning optics, and calibrating instruments before routine science begins.
  • Roman carries a 2.4‑meter mirror and a 300‑megapixel Wide Field Instrument that gives roughly 100 times Hubble’s field of view so it can map more than two billion galaxies to study cosmic structure and dark energy.
  • The telescope will also conduct a large exoplanet survey using microlensing and a coronagraph technology demonstration to directly image nearby worlds, and it will return about a terabyte of science data to Earth each day.
  • The mission is managed by NASA with industry and international partners, has a five‑year primary baseline with design margins for a possible five‑year extension, and is expected to transform wide‑field astronomy and spur follow‑up studies with Hubble, Webb and ground telescopes.
