Overview
- Film Workshop confirmed that Nansun Shi died at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital on 13 July 2026 at age 75 from complications of a long-term immune condition and recent infections that led to multiple organ dysfunction.
- The company said Shi had experienced declining health since 2022 and was surrounded by family in her final hours, with memorial and funeral arrangements to be announced later.
- Shi co-founded Film Workshop with director Tsui Hark in 1984 and produced landmark Hong Kong films including A Better Tomorrow and the first Infernal Affairs, the latter of which was later remade by Martin Scorsese as The Departed.
- Beyond Film Workshop, Shi served as a senior executive at Media Asia and ran the international sales agency Distribution Workshop, and she continued producing into the 2020s, including a 2025 Lunar New Year hit with Tsui Hark.
- Her honors included France’s Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters and a 2025 Hong Kong Film Awards Lifetime Achievement Award, and her death removes a key architect of Hong Kong’s international film reach as tributes and memorial plans begin to appear.
