Naidu Launches Rural Anna Canteens, Taking Andhra Pradesh Network to 269

The rural rollout signals a welfare push that uses Rs 5 meals to curb hunger.

  • Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated an Anna Canteen in Dharanikota on Wednesday, bringing 62 rural outlets online and lifting the statewide total to 269.
  • The network now spans 204 urban sites and 65 in villages, serving Rs 5 meals for poor and daily-wage workers who rely on low-cost food near their jobs.
  • Each canteen serves about 1,013 meals a day at a reported operating cost of Rs 26,250 per outlet.
  • Across the state, about 2.10 lakh people eat at the canteens daily, with subsidies topping Rs 54 lakh each day and the new rural sites adding about Rs 18 lakh.
  • Over 21 months, the state counts 8.80 crore meals and Rs 243 crore in subsidies, and it reports spending Rs 43 crore on new construction with five more outlets being readied.
