Nagaland Assembly Passes Rs 22,127 Crore Budget for 2026–27

The vote sets spending under tighter central transfers following the end of revenue deficit grants.

Overview

  • Lawmakers approved the spending plan on Friday, authorising Rs 22,127.33 crore through the Appropriation Bill with about Rs 17,972.70 crore for revenue costs and Rs 4,154.63 crore for capital works.
  • Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had tabled a 2026–27 budget that projects a Rs 337.04 crore closing deficit, improving on the revised 2025–26 shortfall of Rs 411.81 crore.
  • The plan sets Rs 1,350 crore for development projects, gives the social sector the largest share at 18 percent, and introduces SDG-linked, outcome, and gender budgeting to track results.
  • The government set aside Rs 100.57 crore for the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority, and the FNTA Bill was introduced for consideration with the Centre signalling an April inauguration as a goal.
  • Rio warned that Nagaland’s reduced share of central taxes under the 16th Finance Commission and the loss of revenue deficit grants strain cash flows, and he sought at least Rs 4,500 crore in central support to protect salaries, pensions, and debt service.
