MVA Locks Up 15 of 17 Maharashtra Council Seats as Talks Tighten Ahead of Nominations

The opposition’s agreement concentrates most seats with Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) and puts pressure on the ruling Mahayuti to finish its sharing pact before the June 1 nomination deadline.

Overview

  • On Friday the Maha Vikas Aghadi finalised allocations for 15 of the 17 Legislative Council seats, giving Congress eight seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) four and NCP (SP) three.
  • The MVA has left Nanded and Nashik unresolved with all three partners staking claims and said it will settle those two seats within two days.
  • Ruling Mahayuti talks remain unfinished and sources say the BJP is likely to take 10–11 seats with Shinde’s Shiv Sena and the Pawar‑led NCP taking the remainder, a split party leaders expect to finalise by Saturday.
  • Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal has accused the BJP and its allies of using money power to poach corporators, alleging advance payments of around Rs 5 lakh to sway votes.
  • Nominations close on June 1 with polling on June 18 and counting on June 22, and because local‑body representatives elect council members these seat allocations will shape local control and alliance strength across the state.
