Murmu Begins First Manipur Visit Since 2023, Unveils Projects as Shutdown Closes Imphal Markets

The trip under President's Rule signals central outreach after ethnic violence.

Overview

  • President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Imphal by an Indian Air Force flight, received a guard of honour, watched a polo exhibition at Mapal Kangjeibung, and attended a civic reception.
  • She laid foundation stones for 14 projects worth ₹1,180 crore and inaugurated 12 projects worth ₹207 crore across sectors including tribal development, power, drinking water, education, tourism and sports.
  • In her address, Murmu acknowledged the suffering from the violence and said addressing people’s concerns is the government’s highest priority, pledging support for harmony, security and inclusive development.
  • Security forces enforced a multi-layered grid with route sanitisation, drone surveillance and anti-sabotage checks, while a CorCom-called shutdown kept markets shut and vehicles off roads; the Nupi Lal observance was exempted.
  • On December 12, she is scheduled to pay tribute at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex before traveling to Senapati to address a public function, launch projects and, per the official itinerary, interact with IDPs and the Maram Naga PVTG community.
