Murder Investigation Opened After Bus Driver Dies Following Battersea Bridge Assault

Detectives are gathering footage and witness accounts while evidence is prepared ahead of a Crown Court hearing on 15 June.

Overview

  • A 64-year-old Transport for London driver, Sergei Krajev, was assaulted on the pavement beside a bus stop on Battersea Bridge shortly before 12:30am on Monday and died in hospital on Tuesday.
  • A 32-year-old man, Gary Jones of Twickenham, was arrested at the scene, charged with causing grievous bodily harm, remanded in custody and is due to appear at Kingston Crown Court on 15 June.
  • The Metropolitan Police have opened a murder investigation led by Detective Inspector Sarah Lee and are asking the public to provide dashcam or mobile footage and other information quoting reference CAD 174/18May.
  • Krajev’s family paid tribute to him as a caring husband, father and grandfather and are being supported by specialist police officers while Transport for London engages with the inquiry.
