Overview
- SWM and MVG, which on Thursday announced a three‑phase plan, will halt trains between Sendlinger Tor and Implerstraße for a total of eight months.
- Phase 1 runs May 18–September 18, 2026, Phase 2 runs October 5–November 27, 2026, and a final shutdown runs April 12–August 1, 2027, with work paused for Oktoberfest and the Advent period.
- MVG will run two surface bus lines in place of trains, with one linking Implerstraße, Poccistraße, Goetheplatz and Sendlinger Tor, and another linking Implerstraße and Hauptbahnhof Süd via those stops.
- The overhaul will add steel supports across the station vaults and include fire‑safety upgrades, asbestos removal, new escalators, raised platforms and a tactile guidance system for better access.
- SWM traces the problems to 1970s Sigma‑Oval tension steel that has not aged well and notes sensors installed since 2017 show no immediate collapse risk even as damage has spread.
