Munich's Krampuslauf Sets New Old Town Route for Sunday

City officials will reroute buses around Viktualienmarkt during the two-hour procession.

Overview

  • The run is scheduled for Sunday, December 14, from 15:00 to about 17:00, starting in Augustinerstraße and moving via Färbergraben, Rosental and Viktualienmarkt to the Altes Rathaus.
  • From roughly 15:00 to 17:00, MVG will detour buses: lines 52 and 62 skip ViktualienmarktMarienplatz–St.-Jakobs-Platz and run directly between Blumenstraße and Sendlinger Tor, while line 132 turns at Isartor to Isartor/Zweibrückenstraße, with notices via signage, announcements, website and the MVGO app.
  • Organizers expect about 25 groups and more than 300 performers from Bavaria, Austria and South Tyrol, with reports anticipating crowds in the tens of thousands.
  • The city situates the event in a long local tradition documented since 1740, with the modern Munich Krampuslauf revived in 2004.
  • Officials and the Sparifankerl-Pass group stress that playful interaction is part of the custom and not threatening, and note the elaborate gear costs roughly €1,800–€2,500 per costume with masks weighing up to around 10 kilograms.
