Munich Will Run U3 and U6 Normally During Oktoberfest

MVG says the temporary pause frees trains to carry festival crowds, with heavy structural work set to resume under a phased timetable.

Overview

  • The Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) confirmed that U3 and U6 trains will operate without restrictions for Oktoberfest from Saturday, 19 September until 4 October to handle the city’s peak demand.
  • Since May the section between Sendlinger Tor and Implerstraße has been closed for a major overhaul and is being served by two rail‑replacement bus lines labeled U6 and X6 with routes and stops adjusted iteratively.
  • Crews have completed large concrete repairs using roughly 220 tonnes of spritzmörtel, removed hazardous materials including asbestos and lead, and are installing new ventilation, cooling and fire‑safety systems because Poccistraße showed statics problems and Goetheplatz had structural damage.
  • Passengers and advocacy groups report crowded buses, longer journey times and delays in peak hours, and they are urging the city to consider temporary measures to give replacement buses priority in street traffic.
  • After Oktoberfest the work resumes: a single‑track phase runs 5 October–27 November, a winter pause follows 28 November–11 April, and the final full closure is planned 12 April–1 August 2027 as part of a program costing over €60 million to secure the stations for decades.
