Munich Reports Stable Urban Bat Populations as LBV Prepares Winter Thermal Survey

A thermal-imaging survey is about to begin to pinpoint winter roosts for stronger protection.

Overview

  • Thirteen bat species persist in Munich with largely stable populations, according to the LBV.
  • The LBV will launch a winter roost search using a new thermal-imaging camera to improve identification and protection of hibernation sites.
  • Two bat-friendly parks opened in 2025 in Au and Johanneskirchen, where nine species have been confirmed, including the highly endangered in Bavaria Kleinabendsegler.
  • Volunteer mapping uncovered ten previously unknown summer roosts, with up to 99 bats recorded in a single shelter.
  • More than 400 injured or orphaned bats—nearly 300 of them juveniles—were rehabilitated last year, as city–LBV measures span bat boxes, insect-friendly plantings, and building-consultation under strict federal protections.
