Mumbai Unveils 70-Hectare Coastal Road 'Green Necklace' Plan

Reliance’s Rs 400 crore CSR plan awaits BMC nod with a delivery target of roughly three seasons.

Overview

  • Municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani presented the masterplan to residents, outlining a continuous public realm across reclaimed parcels along the 10.58 km Coastal Road.
  • Reliance has been selected to landscape and maintain the stretch for 30 years under CSR, with seven landscape architects engaged and a final design submitted to the BMC gardens committee.
  • Planned features include pickleball courts at Haji Ali, a sea-facing bird trail near Bhulabhai Desai Road, Miyawaki microforests, an amphitheatre, shaded promenades and distributed sports and play areas.
  • Officials projected visible transformation within two years and completion in about three seasons, with work to start after required approvals.
  • The BMC reiterated a Supreme Court affidavit prohibiting commercial use of the reclaimed land and proposed converting an existing construction jetty into a small helipad for emergencies subject to clearances, while separately outlining a botanical garden and sports facilities at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse parcel.
