Overview
- The University of Mumbai's Academic Council, which approved the fourth-year framework Wednesday, set a 2026–27 start for the new structure.
- Students will choose between an Honours track with 160–176 credits and a compulsory 4-credit internship or an Honours with Research track that requires a 12-credit dissertation and a minimum 7.5 CGPA.
- Only colleges with postgraduate programmes can run the fourth year, research-track access requires recognised research centres, and autonomous colleges launch first with non-autonomous institutions expected from 2027–28.
- The fourth year is classified at National Credit Framework Level 6.0, the same level as a postgraduate diploma and the first year of a two-year master's course, which makes credit transfer and progression easier.
- Engineering graduates can enter directly into the second year of the M.Sc. in Nano Science and Nano Technology after two bridge courses, opening a route into areas such as semiconductors, battery tech and energy systems.
