Mumbai to Roll Out BMC-Run MANAS Air-Quality Network Within Six Months

The locally controlled platform will operate parallel to CPCB stations using hyperlocal sensors plus an IIT Kanpur AI model to pinpoint sources.

Overview

  • Officials say the system will go live in the next six months with public access targeted for mid-2026 after testing.
  • MANAS will deploy 75 cost-effective sensors to deliver neighbourhood-scale readings on a BMC-managed portal independent of the national dashboard.
  • An IIT Kanpur artificial intelligence model will analyse data to identify probable pollution sources and suggest mitigation measures.
  • Before wider release, BMC will validate sensor outputs by running them alongside Mumbai’s 28 CPCB-linked CAAQMS stations and calibrating for consistency.
  • Placement will follow a mapped airshed grid of the city, with the initiative launched as recent readings show recurring concerns, including an AQI of 125 on Tuesday.
