Mumbai Sets 10% Water Cut From May 15 as Maintenance and Leak Hit Supply

The step aims to stretch lake reserves before a likely weak monsoon linked to El Niño.

Overview

  • BMC said it will reduce citywide supply by 10% to extend reservoir stocks after officials warned that rainfall could be weaker than usual this year.
  • Thane will see a 24-hour shutdown from 12 pm on May 7 to 12 pm on May 8 for MIDC repairs at the Barvi–Jambhul plant, affecting Diva, Mumbra, Kalwa, and pockets of Wagle and Manpada with low pressure expected after restoration.
  • Mira-Bhayandar announced the same 24-hour halt of MIDC water, while STEM Authority supply will continue at reduced pressure until the main feed resumes.
  • A crack in a 1,650 mm main on Dr E. Moses Road forced BMC to cut supply in parts of D, E, and G South wards as crews carry out emergency repairs and ask residents to conserve water.
  • City leaders accelerated pre-monsoon desilting with a May 31 target and ordered CCTV and robotic cleaning, even as Govandi residents filed a legal notice over delays and officials cited failed tenders and threats, and 92 Marathwada villages rely on tankers, showing wider strain.
