Mumbai Region Mandates Artificial Ponds for Maghi Ganesh Immersions

Following court directives under MPCB rules, authorities route immersions to artificial ponds to protect water bodies.

Overview

  • BMC requires all idol immersions to be conducted in civic artificial ponds in accordance with Bombay High Court directions.
  • The Mumbai civic body will provide ponds for idols up to six feet and has introduced an offline single-window pandal permission system with a Rs 100 fee.
  • BMC has prohibited colored chemicals, thermocol, plastics, fabrics, flowers, garlands and decorative items in water, directing devotees to deposit such waste in Nirmalya Kalash containers.
  • Thane has issued size-based guidelines sending 2–3 ft idols to tanks, 3–6 ft idols to artificial lakes and idols above six feet to designated creek ghats, while ordering POP idol vendors to maintain sales registers.
  • TMC says immersion water will be treated before release into natural bodies with strict purification protocols, and NMMC has created 22 artificial ponds near traditional sites with facilities and emergency support.
