Mumbai Orders 10% Water Cut From May 15 as Reservoir Levels Drop

Officials plan reserve releases to stretch limited stocks through the early monsoon.

Overview

  • The BMC, which announced the move Monday, will cut city water supply by 10% starting Friday, May 15.
  • BMC data shows the seven supply lakes hold 340,399 million litres of usable water, equal to 23.52% of the city’s annual need.
  • India’s weather office forecast a weaker monsoon linked to El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole, patterns that often reduce June–August rainfall.
  • The cut also applies to BMC water sent to Thane and Bhiwandi-Nizampur, and officials urged homes and businesses to use less water.
  • Reserve releases will add about 147,092 million litres from Bhatsa and 90,000 million litres from Upper Vaitarna, which a civic official said could help stretch supply to around August 17.
