Mumbai Enforces Heavy-Vehicle Curbs With Peak-Hour Ban and South Mumbai Night-Only Access

Officials say the measures target chronic gridlock caused by large, slow vehicles.

Overview

  • Restrictions took effect on February 1, with heavy vehicles barred citywide from 8–11 am and 5–9 pm, and from South Mumbai from 7 am to midnight with access limited to midnight–7 am.
  • Heavy vehicles are prohibited at all hours on the Eastern Freeway, with only public buses exempt from the corridor ban.
  • Exemptions cover vehicles carrying essentials such as vegetables, milk, bakery items, drinking water and fuel, along with ambulances, school buses and government or semi-government vehicles; luxury buses may enter the city but not South Mumbai during restricted hours.
  • New parking rules forbid heavy vehicles from stopping on public roads, allowing only private or rented facilities or authorised pay-and-park areas, with a cap of two water tankers near supply points.
  • Police have announced stricter patrols, surveillance and penalties including fines or impoundment, while advising operators to reschedule trips, launching a public-awareness drive and revising traffic zones in Colaba, near the Gateway of India and around CSMT.
