Mumbai Court Orders Repatriation of Kumar Pillai to Hong Kong Within a Month

The court cited the extradition rule of speciality to say India cannot pursue other cases without fresh permission from the extraditing country.

Overview

  • Special Judge S R Navander issued the order on February 13, directing the Mumbai police commissioner to start repatriation steps and file a compliance report within one month.
  • The court said Pillai cannot be tried for offences beyond those cleared for extradition unless consent is obtained from the country that surrendered him.
  • Pillai was arrested in Singapore in 2016 and extradited to face three cases out of six sought; he was acquitted in 2020, 2022 and 2024, with no appeals filed.
  • Mumbai Police opposed repatriation, citing other pending matters and non-bailable or open warrants, including a move tied to a 2007 murder investigation.
  • After the repatriation order, Pillai sought cancellation of an open warrant, with the hearing adjourned for an order expected on Wednesday.
