Multiple Serious Crashes and Planned Maintenance Disrupt Motorways Across England

Police investigations have left long closures on the M11 and A66 that are increasing pressure on routes already scheduled for weekend maintenance.

Overview

  • A serious lorry collision on the M11 near Duxford on June 12 has closed the southbound carriageway and is expected to remain shut for some time while Cambridgeshire Police investigate.
  • A separate multi-vehicle crash between J9 and J8 on the M11 caused two lanes to close, produced up to five miles of congestion and required vehicle recovery teams to be dispatched.
  • Cumbria Police closed the A66 at Kirkby Thore in both directions after a serious crash, and National Highways has put signed diversions in place with an alternative route for vehicles over 14 feet 6 inches.
  • National Highways confirmed numerous planned overnight and weekend closures from June 12 to 15 on motorways including the M3, M27, M40, M6, M55 and stretches around Greater Manchester, with signed diversions and live updates available.
  • Emergency scene management and ongoing enquiries mean closures could be prolonged, drivers should expect spillover congestion on alternative routes and check Traffic England, AA or Inrix for live travel information.
