Overview
- A two-vehicle crash on the A1 between Denwick and South Charlton on 21 May killed three people and left a fourth seriously injured, and Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit has opened a formal inquiry.
- A three-vehicle collision on the A47 at South Brink, Wisbech on 21 May closed the road both ways for most of the day and prompted National Highways to issue roughly 50‑mile diversion routes that add substantial travel time.
- Separate incidents on the A46 and other routes overnight and into 22 May produced further fatalities and at least one arrest on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, with local forces conducting live investigations.
- Several long closures have since been lifted after hours of recovery work, but National Highways and traffic monitors warn that major diversions and heavy delays remain on affected corridors.
- Police forces are urgently appealing for witnesses, CCTV and dashcam footage and are especially keen to hear from drivers who stopped at the scenes or passed the routes around the times of the collisions.
