Multinational Search Underway for Two U.S. Service Members Missing in Morocco

The multinational search tests the U.S.–Moroccan partnership during Africa’s largest annual military drill.

Overview

  • AFRICOM and Moroccan forces launched a coordinated land, air and sea search after two Americans were reported missing Saturday near the Cap Draa Training Area by Tan-Tan.
  • U.S. officials said the missing are Army soldiers and early reports point to an off‑duty cliff fall into the Atlantic with no sign of foul play.
  • Helicopters, drones, naval vessels, and Moroccan mountaineers and divers are combing the coastline and nearby waters.
  • Training at the site was paused Sunday during the search, in an annual African Lion exercise that spans Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana and Senegal and brings together thousands of troops.
  • AFRICOM says the case remains under investigation and identities are withheld pending family notification as teams focus on finding the soldiers.
