MTC to Revive Clifford Odets’s Awake and Sing! on Broadway

A Broadway staging that reunites veteran actors with a director making her Broadway debut for MTC’s 2026–27 season.

Overview

  • Manhattan Theatre Club announced Monday that Danny Burstein, Jessica Hecht and Jeremy Shamos will star in Awake and Sing!, with previews set for December 2026 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre and an opening night in January 2027.
  • Tyne Rafaeli will direct and will make her Broadway debut after recent success directing the Off‑Broadway play Data.
  • The revival is produced by Brian and Dayna Lee and Nicole and Stephanie Kramer and additional casting and design credits will be announced later.
  • Awake and Sing! is a 1935 Group Theatre play about three generations of a Bronx family during the Depression and was last staged on Broadway in 2006 in a production that featured Mark Ruffalo and Lauren Ambrose.
  • The production anchors MTC’s 2026–27 season alongside titles such as School Girls and Montauk, and it signals the company’s emphasis on revivals and new commissions while offering contemporary audiences a look at Odets’s themes of poverty, ambition and family conflict.
