MTA Watchdog Says LIRR Official Sought Jobs for Son From Six Vendors in Ethics Breach

Vendors now face MTA follow-up for failing to report the solicitations as required under the agency’s code of ethics.

Overview

  • The inspector general’s report says the senior LIRR manager used his MTA email in 2023 to circulate his son’s résumé to employees at six contractors, including former LIRR staffers now in the private sector.
  • One vendor hired the son while the official continued overseeing that company’s MTA work, and both the son and a company contact were later fired after internal emails surfaced.
  • The watchdog found the conduct violated MTA prohibitions on soliciting gifts as well as state public officer law, and it referred the matter to the New York State Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government.
  • Investigators reported no evidence the related procurement, tied to positive train-control work, was compromised or that the vendor gained an advantage.
  • The MTA said it will question all six vendors about the lack of reporting and will require proof that each distributed the agency’s vendor code of ethics to employees; the official retired in September 2025 while the probe was pending.
