MTA Police Cut Power to Rescue Cat From LIRR Tracks on Long Island

The cat is now stable under care at South Shore Feral Care.

Overview

  • MTA Police rescued an orange-and-cream cat from active Long Island Rail Road tracks between Lindenhurst and Babylon after a Sunday evening alert from an engineer.
  • The engineer first saw the cat near Lindenhurst on Saturday night and, after noticing it move around 7 p.m. Sunday, called for help.
  • Officers ordered the rail power shut off so they could step onto the tracks safely, then used a net to secure the cat and placed it in a crate as shown in video.
  • The animal, now called Garfield, was taken to South Shore Feral Care in West Babylon for evaluation and is reported stable under a veterinary team that includes an orthopedic specialist.
  • Police said the cat was scared but appeared uninjured, though photos show a scratch on its face.
