MTA Finalizes Work-Zone Speed Cameras for Bridges and Tunnels Starting Spring 2026

The initiative focuses on construction areas on MTA crossings with site selection still to come.

Overview

  • Drivers going at least 10 mph over the limit in monitored work zones will face citations after a 30-day warning period.
  • Fines are set at $50 for a first offense and $100 for repeat violations.
  • In-state drivers are expected to receive tickets within about 14 business days of an offense.
  • Cameras will be deployed in selected work zones on crossings such as the RFK Bridge, Queens Midtown Tunnel, and Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, with specific locations to be chosen by the MTA.
  • The program is scheduled through 2031, with some committee members expressing interest in permanence, and most revenue will fund operating costs and work-zone safety projects.
