MSRDC to Refund Rs 5.16 Crore to 1.2 Lakh Motorists After 33-Hour MumbaiPune Expressway Jam

Refunds will be auto-credited to FASTag accounts using IRB transaction data, as a separate brake-failure tanker incident has renewed demands for safety reviews.

Overview

  • MSRDC says about 1.2 lakh affected users will receive Rs 5.16 crore directly in their FASTag accounts in the coming days.
  • The reimbursement covers tolls deducted on the MumbaiPune Expressway and the Pune–Bengaluru Highway during the standstill.
  • Toll deductions continued automatically for some vehicles despite an order to suspend collections until plaza barriers were opened, prompting the refund.
  • MSRDC has sought detailed FASTag logs from concessionaire IRB Infrastructure and asked for an explanation on why tolling did not halt immediately, while consumer groups press for disciplinary action and formal probes.
  • A separate propylene tanker suffered brake failure near the Amrutanjan Bridge on Feb. 23, causing brief congestion but no leak or injuries, with police detaining the driver and traffic cleared within minutes.
