Mount Dukono Eruption Kills 3 Hikers

Continuing eruptions keep recovery crews from reaching the victims.

Overview

  • Mount Dukono on Halmahera island, which erupted Friday at 7:41 a.m. local time, sent ash about 10 kilometers into the sky, the volcanology agency said.
  • Rescuers have evacuated 17 of about 20 hikers who were on the slopes, and officials say three people were killed.
  • Search teams resumed work Saturday with more than 100 personnel and thermal drones to find two Singaporeans and one Indonesian who are still missing.
  • Authorities kept the volcano at the third-highest alert level and warned communities to the north, including Tobelo, to watch for ashfall and rain-triggered mudflows.
  • Officials say the group entered a 4 km exclusion zone that has been closed since April, and investigators are probing possible negligence by guides or operators.
